A New Book by Cindy Burrell – Reformulating the Christian Marriage Counseling Model Where Abuse is Involved

Our friend Cindy Burrell has published a new book which is available on Amazon here*

This is the back cover description –

In the years since I began working with abuse victims, I have been shocked – and at times horrified – by the accounts victims have shared regarding their Christian marriage counseling experiences. Coupled with my own history, it is sadly apparent that many abuse victims have been ignored, abandoned, and even excommunicated from their churches for acknowledging the toxic, ungodly nature of their spouses and refusing to accomodate abuse in their homes.

It is time to take an in-depth look at the common Christian marriage counseling model, identify its weaknesses and present a new model based upon biblical truth and common sense – a model that acknowledges that victims matter, and abuse should never be tolerated in God’s sacred institution of marriage.

Thank you, Cindy, for your work in writing this new tool. May the Lord bless it to His purposes and glory.

  1. This looks really interesting. By “Christan marriage counseling” do they mean ?
    1. The “nouthetic” branch, which calls itself Christian marriage counseling
    2. The marriage counseling undertaken by Christians?
    3. Both
    4. Neither – something else.

  2. I am so grateful to have your endorsement of my new book, Pastor Crippen!

This book is a culmination of my own experiences coupled with the 12 years I have spent ministering to victims of abuse. I have heard countless stories from those who have been shamed, blamed and ostracized by their Christian counselors, pastors, family members and believing friends for leaving their abusers or divorcing them. But why?

It is painfully apparent that the common Christian marriage counseling model begins with a lack of biblical understanding when it comes to God’s heart for marriage, as well as His directives to identify genuinely wicked people in our midst and protect the innocent.

The book takes an in-depth look at the common counseling model and the Scriptures that typically form its foundation, explains why the model fails when abuse has permeated the relationship, and presents a new model that utilizes processes and supports outcomes based on the truth rather than a predetermined outcome.

The book will benefit victims with regard to what to look for in a counselor and the counseling environment as well as pastors, church leaders and counselors who are willing to take a deeper look at the common Christian marriage counseling model and consider how it should be reformulated when abuse is destroying the relationship.

Again, Pastor, I thank you for your support in this vital endeavor.
